Case Study: Thermal Fluid Analysis of a Muffler

This is an introduction to the recommended software Femap Thermal/Flow for customers who are starting thermal fluid analysis with Femap.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: Femap Thermal, Femap Flow ■Analysis: Thermal Fluid Analysis ■Industry: Automotive Femap Thermal/Flow is software for thermal fluid analysis that operates as a Femap application. It can be used with the same operational feel as Femap. Through the combination of Femap Thermal and Femap Flow for thermal fluid analysis, we calculated the flow of exhaust gases within the muffler and the temperature distribution of the muffler due to high-temperature exhaust. By using Femap Thermal and Femap Flow simultaneously, thermal fluid analysis can be conducted. It can solve complex problems such as heat transfer at the fluid-structure interface, fluid flow, thermal conduction in structures, and consideration of radiation at the surface of structures. In this case, we conducted thermal fluid analysis focused on the muffler. We confirmed that we could obtain necessary parameters for design by determining the temperature difference of exhaust gases at the inlet and outlet, the flow of exhaust gases within the muffler, and the temperature of the surface of the muffler structure. □ For other functions and details, please refer to the catalog.

[Example] Analysis of radiant heat transfer within a container

We conducted a heat transfer analysis of an internal radiation container composed of multiple radiation zones.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: Femap Thermal ■Analysis: Thermal Analysis ■Industry: Other In this analysis example, a thermal radiation transfer analysis within a container composed of multiple radiation zones was conducted. In this case, the radiation zones consist of three areas: the interior of the container, which includes the heat source, heat receiving surface, and inner wall; the space between the inner and outer walls; and the area from the outer wall to the environment. The calculation of the form factor is known to take time due to the exhaustive pairwise calculations between element surfaces, resulting in a large matrix size. Femap Thermal utilizes the Hemicube method with OpenGL to process the time-consuming form factor calculations quickly. Additionally, with a dedicated interface for thermal analysis, it is easy to set up radiation settings even for models with multiple enclosures. □ For other functions and details, please refer to the catalog.

[Example] Analysis of Aluminum Frame Structure

Automatically calculate beam cross-section performance from CAD data!!!

【Case Summary】 ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Industry: Architecture Using high-rigidity lightweight aluminum extrusion materials, various frame structures can be assembled. When designing these structures, it is necessary to investigate the deformations, stresses, and vibration characteristics that occur during use to ensure functionality and safety. In FEM analysis of frame structures, it is common to model them using beam elements; however, the cross-section of aluminum extrusion materials is complex, and traditional beam element outputs cannot display the characteristics of detailed sections. On the other hand, modeling thin-walled structures with solid elements is challenging, and creating high-quality meshes results in large models that require substantial computational resources and high-performance post-processing. This example introduces the applicability of Femap with NX Nastran for such analyses. ◎ For more detailed information, please refer to the catalog or contact us directly.

[Example] Vibration of liquid tanks and sloshing of liquid surfaces during an earthquake.

Case study using seismic waves from the Great East Japan Earthquake!!

**Case Summary** ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Industry: Construction There are many structural forms for containers that store liquids and their supports. During an earthquake, the dynamic liquid pressure caused by sloshing of the liquid surface in the tank acts on the container's side walls and bottom plate, resulting in damage to the tank and rocking vibrations that can cause parts of the bottom plate to lift, leading to tank damage. This case study utilized the virtual fluid boundary and phantom elements of NX Nastran to perform transient response analysis on three types of tanks, as shown in the figure on the right, using the seismic waves from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (M9). Below, we present the sloshing behavior during the earthquake and the distribution of dynamic liquid pressure. * Downloaded from K-NET For more detailed information, please refer to the catalog or contact us directly.

[Example] External Super Element 1

Reduction of analysis costs, enhancement of information security!!!

【Case Overview】 ■Product Name: NX Nastran There has been an image that Super Elements (SE) are only applicable in the aerospace and automotive fields and can only be used by a limited number of analysis specialists. There has been no pre- and post-processing tool that fully supports SE analysis, and the data creation process has been complicated, which has hindered its widespread adoption until now. Femap has started to support external Super Elements for Nastran from version 11. In this case study, we will use an assembly model from the Femap example collection to demonstrate that SE analysis can be used by anyone with Femap v11.

[Example] Linear static analysis considering initial bolt load

Linear static analysis using beam elements and bar elements for bolt connection parts!!!

**Case Summary** ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Industry: Mechanical Components NX Nastran allows for various analyses considering pre-tensioned bolts (linear static analysis, nonlinear static analysis SOL601, linear buckling analysis, etc.). Using the Femap interface, modeling of bolt connections with beam elements, bar elements, and solid elements, as well as the setting of bolt loads, can be done easily. This case modeled the bolts using bar elements and solid elements and compared the results from both methods. Two fittings with a surface static friction coefficient of 0.15 were fastened with M10 bolts. An axial force of 150 kgf was applied, with one side fixed, and a linear static analysis was performed (Figure 1). The comparison of results from the bar elements and solid elements showed that the maximum and minimum Mises stress values and the maximum and minimum displacement values for the two fittings were the same for both methods. ● For more features and details, please download the catalog.
