[Example] Hull strength analysis using the finite element method

A full hull model close to the actual structure was created, and strength analysis of the model was conducted.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Analysis: Linear Static Analysis ■Industry: Railways and Shipping Finite element method strength calculations are widely used in hull design. The hull structure, composed of many components such as decks, side plates, double bottoms, bulkheads, and longitudinal and transverse strength frames, is complex, making it difficult to analyze just a part of it. This example created a full model that closely resembles the actual structure and conducted a strength analysis of the entire hull model. - Creation of complex hull FEM models using Femap's mesh generation capabilities - Creation and management of loads such as static/dynamic water pressure and cargo conditions - Improved computational efficiency through continuous analysis of multiple load cases - Analysis of large-scale models made possible by NX Nastran's parallel processing capabilities □ For other features and details, please refer to the catalog.

[Example] Rotor Dynamics Frequency Analysis

We conducted synchronous and asynchronous frequency analysis of rotating bodies in a fixed coordinate system.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Analysis: Frequency Response Analysis ■Industry: Other In this analysis example, synchronous and asynchronous frequency analyses of a rotating body in a fixed coordinate system were conducted. The former is an analysis where the rotation speed and the excitation load frequency match, resulting in a response peak at the dangerous speed point on the 1P line in the Campbell diagram. The latter involves a rotor rotating at a constant speed with varying excitation load frequencies, leading to rotor resonance at the intersection points of each mode with the vertical line in the Campbell diagram. □ For other functions and details, please refer to the catalog.

[Example] Large-scale finite element analysis of train vehicle dynamics

An eigenvalue analysis of a 10-car train model was conducted using NX Nastran, and the natural frequencies up to 20 Hz were obtained.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: NX Nastran ■Analysis: Modal Analysis ■Industry: Railways and Shipping Since railway vehicles operate in a coupled manner, it is necessary to analyze the motion characteristics of the entire train when considering vehicle dynamics. To accurately predict the vibrations generated in various parts of the moving vehicle, a vehicle simulation using a finite element model (FEM) that closely resembles the actual structure, rather than a uniform beam or equivalent plate structure, is required. On the other hand, such analyses heavily depend on the computational environment, model creation, and result visualization capabilities, necessitating parallel computing solutions and efficient pre/post-processing software. This example involves creating the vehicle body using Femap and conducting a modal analysis of a 10-car train model with NX Nastran to determine the natural frequencies up to 20 Hz. Additionally, the application of FEMAP and GLView for post-processing large-scale finite element analyses will be introduced.

Case Study: Thermal Fluid Analysis of a Muffler

This is an introduction to the recommended software Femap Thermal/Flow for customers who are starting thermal fluid analysis with Femap.

**Case Overview** ■Product Name: Femap Thermal, Femap Flow ■Analysis: Thermal Fluid Analysis ■Industry: Automotive Femap Thermal/Flow is software for thermal fluid analysis that operates as a Femap application. It can be used with the same operational feel as Femap. Through the combination of Femap Thermal and Femap Flow for thermal fluid analysis, we calculated the flow of exhaust gases within the muffler and the temperature distribution of the muffler due to high-temperature exhaust. By using Femap Thermal and Femap Flow simultaneously, thermal fluid analysis can be conducted. It can solve complex problems such as heat transfer at the fluid-structure interface, fluid flow, thermal conduction in structures, and consideration of radiation at the surface of structures. In this case, we conducted thermal fluid analysis focused on the muffler. We confirmed that we could obtain necessary parameters for design by determining the temperature difference of exhaust gases at the inlet and outlet, the flow of exhaust gases within the muffler, and the temperature of the surface of the muffler structure. □ For other functions and details, please refer to the catalog.

[Analysis Case] Nonlinear Transient Analysis of Brake Rotors

Introducing the excessive stress analysis of automotive disc brake rotating rotors!

We would like to introduce the "Nonlinear Transient Analysis of Brake Rotors" conducted by our company. The coupling of thermal and structural analysis is necessary due to the heat transfer that occurs when the rotating rotor and the pad come into contact. Friction generates heat, leading to uneven thermal expansion and resulting in stress. In this case, we completely constrained the nodes around the holes of the rotating rotor and performed thermal stress analysis by applying heat flux and heat transfer coefficients to the inner and outer surfaces of the rotating rotor, as well as heat transfer coefficients to the surfaces of the fins and hats. [Analysis Overview] - Completely constrained the nodes around the holes of the rotating rotor - Applied heat flux and heat transfer coefficients to the inner and outer surfaces of the rotating rotor, as well as heat transfer coefficients to the surfaces of the fins and hats *For detailed information about this case, please refer to the related links. Feel free to contact us for more details.
