It is portable and can test square or circular samples with a thickness of up to 12.7mm (1/2 inch) and a side length or diameter of 101mm (4 inches). The height of the graduated arm is adjusted according to the thickness of the sample. The diamond cutting needle is brought into contact with the surface of the sample, and the switch is turned on.

A hemisphere with a diameter of 1mm (0.04 inches, standard) gradually moves downwards on the surface of the sample while moving 60mm (2.36 inches) relative to it. As the sample is pulled towards the operator, the arm with the needle automatically lowers, and it slowly rises after the test is completed. By rotating the gauge on the wet paint film, the central wheel reads the scale at the point where it touches the film. This value represents the thickness of the film.
