A testing device for determining the hardness of a coating film using pencils of varying hardness (in accordance with JIS K5600-5-4).
The pencil scratch test is also known as the Wolff-Wilborn test. It uses pencils with different hardness (graphite cores) to determine the hardness of the coating film. The Elcometer 501 is designed so that the pencil core presses against the coating film at a constant angle of 45° with a force of 7.5N (1.68lbF). A pencil sharpened with a dedicated pencil sharpener and sandpaper is attached to the Elcometer 501 and pressed against the surface of a flat and smooth coating film. The hardness of the softest core that scratches the coating film will be the hardness of the coating film.
