A hemisphere with a diameter of 1mm (0.04 inches, standard) gradually moves downwards on the surface of the sample while moving 60mm (2.36 inches) relative to it. As the sample is pulled towards the operator, the arm with the needle automatically lowers, and it slowly rises after the test is completed. To improve the reproducibility and repeatability of the test, the cutting needle automatically contacts the sample, moves across the film surface, and automatically rises after the test is completed. Depending on the magnitude of the load, the degree of penetration of the needle varies from surface-only marks to complete destruction of the coating. During the test, when the coating is completely scraped away and the cutting needle touches the metal substrate, the lamp flashes, and the needle of the voltmeter moves.
