Tohoku University Technology: Sensor unit and sensor: T20-156

Integrated and multi modal sensor system

Currently, robots are being introduced in many industrial fields to solve the problem of the working population decrease. In order for robots to perform the same tasks as human in the future, it is important for them to have sensors for senses other than vision (force, pressure, temperature, cold, etc.). For this reason, the development of compact and high-sensitivity sensor using microelectromechanical system technology is underway as sensor for force measurement acting on object. However, the current technology is unable to adequately detect the applied force depending on the direction of the external force. This invention is able to provide a sensor unit and a sensor which detect externally applied force from various directions. It can also provide sensor unit that can obtain a variety of information with a single element. This invention uses a continuous magneto strictive film with many convex 3D shape sensors projecting in the 1st direction relative to the reference plane, which enable the force detection from various directions applied from the exterior.

Tohoku University Technology: Hydrogen Gas Sensor and Manufacturing Method: T08-067

When introducing a 1000 ppm hydrogen-nitrogen mixture into 100% nitrogen, a change in resistance value exceeding one digit and a response time of less than one second is possible.

To solve the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental issues, hydrogen is gaining attention as a potentially useful energy resource for the future. However, there is a risk of explosion if the concentration of hydrogen in the atmosphere exceeds 4%, making it essential to have hydrogen sensors that can accurately and quickly detect hydrogen leaks to use hydrogen fuel safely. In other words, the top priority for hydrogen utilization is said to be the development of sensors that are indispensable for safety measures to use the system with confidence, rather than the development of fuel cells themselves. According to the present invention, it is possible to provide a hydrogen sensor that has a simple structure, is low-cost, highly durable, and possesses high detection sensitivity, a wide detection range, and hydrogen gas selectivity.

Tohoku University Technology: Magnetic field detection with a single planar element: T21-257

Contributing to miniaturization of 3D magnetic field sensors for IoT applications

Magnetic field sensors are used in a variety of applications such as contactless current detection and electronic compasses, etc. Because an ordinary magnetic element detects only magnetic field components in a specific direction, detecting the direction of a magnetic field vector in 3D space requires a 3D combination of elements corresponding to each direction. This is an issue to device miniaturization and integration, which are rapidly increasing in demand in the IoT field. This technology relates to the invention of a planar magnetic field sensor that does not require a 3D structure. The direction of the magnetic field vector in 3D space is determined from the voltage generated in each part of the ferromagnetic Fe-Sn thin films[1]. A 3D magnetic field sensor can be fabricated by patterning a single magneto-sensitive layer by a general-purpose device processing method. In addition to magnetic field sensors, this thin film can be expected to create new applications by combining functions[2-5].

Tohoku University Technology: High frame rate, low depth noise ToF sensor: T22-007

・ In-pixel analog memory array and sub-frame integration ・Frame rate : -10kfps*1, Depth noise : <1.3%*2 *1 at HS mode *2 at HP mode, 0.4-4.2m

・ Recently, ToF sensors that can measure the distance from an object are attracting attention in various fields such as automobiles, robots, and sensor. ・ However, conventional ToF sensors have a issue that it is difficult to improve both characteristics because there is a trade-off between frame rate and depth noise. ・ Therefore, this work has successfully solved the above issue by with in-pixel analog memory array for each image sensor and sub-frame integration. ・ This work achieved up to 10kfps at HS mode and depth noise is less than 1.3% at HP mode(0.4-4.2 m). ・ This work shows higher characteristics than conventional ToF sensors, and therefore, it is expected to be applied to autonomous driving sensors, autonomous running robots, factory automation (FA), drones, VR/AR, etc.

Tohoku University Technology: MTJ device using FeSiAl alloy: T20-1263

High TMR, high sensor sensitivity and cost reduction can be realized using FeSiAl alloy. Low HK can be obtained for FeSiAl films with wide composition range.

TMR sensor is known to be a high sensitivity magnetic sensor which uses the tunnel magnetoresistance effect (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). The TMR sensor performance can be controlled by controlling the magnetic anisotropy (HK) of the free layer. Therefore, it is expected to be applied to the bio-magnetic measurement device that detects the weak magnetic field of a living body at room temperature, the battery level detector for electric vehicle, non-destructive inspection to detect the rupture or deterioration of reinforcing steel bar in concrete structure, etc. NiFe alloy, CoFeB alloy and CoFeSiB alloys have been conventionally developed as free layer of MTJ devices for TMR sensor, but higher sensitivity and lower cost are required. This invention focused on FeSiAl alloy (Sendust) to produce the Sendust thin film of nanometer order thickness which was not able to fabricate. Therefore, this alloy is applied to the free layer to fabricate the MTJ devices that achieve the same level of sensor sensitivity as NiFe alloy, etc. It has been also revealed that the soft magnetic property is excellent over a wider range of composition compared with conventional Sendust.

Tohoku Univ. Technology:Temperature sensing and vibration detection method:T25-060

Wiring-free miniature temperature sensor

Conventional thermal property measurements using thermistors and thermocouples require electrical wiring, which limits further improvements in sensor density and sensitivity. Resonant temperature sensors using in-plane mechanical resonators also suffer from low areal density, and laser-based readout becomes impractical when many sensing points are required. To overcome these limitations, the inventors developed a wiring-free temperature sensor that optically detects the resonance vibration amplitude of a high–aspect ratio micro-resonator. This architecture is well suited to dense array integration and achieves a temperature sensitivity of 32%/°C, exceeding that of frequency-shift-based resonant sensors (35 ppm/°C) and thermistors (2.0%/°C), making it promising for high-sensitivity temperature measurement.
