Free membership registrationEven the best experimental labs cannot replicate actual process conditions, and testing in real plants can be inefficient and sometimes impossible. To test under specific conditions and configurations, WIKA USA has built its own full-size process unit equipped with a reactor and a heating furnace. For thermometers used in process plants, the ideal scenario is to test them in real plants, but the issues are time, cost, and practicality. Refineries and petrochemical plants need to continue operations to maintain profitability, and downtime must be limited to maintenance and repairs only. Testing of thermometers is scheduled during downtime, starting at the beginning of regular maintenance and sometimes conducted before the next scheduled maintenance. The problem is that regular maintenance cycles often exceed four years, leading to prolonged periods without testing.

Free membership registrationWhat does the accuracy of a pressure sensor mean, and how does the inaccuracy that leads to errors in the desired measurement results arise? This video explains the most important elements related to the accuracy of pressure sensors: zero point error, span error, and non-linearity. The interaction of errors such as zero point error, span error, non-linearity, hysteresis, and reproducibility is referred to as "accuracy." The term "accuracy" is frequently used in documents such as product specifications, but it is not clearly defined in standards. Unfortunately, there is no common understanding of what "accuracy" means. In reality, there are various related data points rather than a single "accuracy." All of these collectively represent "accuracy." The elements related to the accuracy of pressure sensors are standardized. For example, measurement errors include systematic and random components, so the numerical value of accuracy is determined statistically. It is necessary to distinguish between the measurement errors displayed as "maximum" and "standard." In the case of maximum error, the majority of the delivered products should have errors smaller than the maximum error. If there is a description of "typ.," the error may be several times the specified "standard" error.

Free membership registrationPressure sensors maintain normal measurement deviations even with differences in operating temperature, but they do not necessarily operate under reference conditions. Therefore, WIKA defines a "total error band" for all pressure sensors. The operating temperature of a pressure sensor consists of ambient temperature and media temperature. It is more common for the sensor to deviate from the ambient temperature that guarantees its accuracy. These temperature influences affect the sensor's precision. The total error band of WIKA pressure sensors indicates the maximum deviation. While deviations vary by instrument, they always fall within the total error band. The total error band is based on a reference temperature and displays deviations that can correspond to typical operating temperatures. The total error band of the pressure sensor is documented in the WIKA data sheet, reflecting the minimum accuracy.

Free membership registrationAll instruments experience aging degradation due to mechanical, chemical, installation, operational environment, and other factors, leading to deviations in measurement values and accuracy. While it is not possible to prevent aging degradation, early detection can be achieved through calibration. What is the difference between calibration and verification? And when should adjustments be made? ◆ Calibration refers to the process of comparing the measurement results of a calibrated standard instrument, certified by national or international standards, with those of the test instrument being calibrated, to determine the extent of any instrument deviation. If the calibration test results fall within the product specifications, a calibration certificate is issued along with the test report. ◆ Verification refers to the process of confirming whether the instrument deviation of the reference measuring instrument is within the range specified by public institutions or other standards, and making a pass/fail judgment. Both calibration and verification aim to assess the quality of the product based on the displayed values. Modifications to the measuring instrument itself are not permitted. ◆ Adjustments allow for modifications to the measuring instrument to keep the detected instrument deviation within the accuracy range. Adjustments are made when the instrument is deemed out of specification after calibration, and the instrument is then adjusted to fall within the accuracy range before re-calibration is conducted.

Free membership registrationThis introduces the differences between accredited calibration based on ISO 17025 and general calibration. You will clearly understand the differences between these two types of calibration certificates and the points to consider. Your measuring instrument can undergo accuracy verification and calibration at WIKA's calibration lab. Calibration can be performed either as general calibration or ISO 17025 accredited calibration. In both cases, the calibration results are documented in a calibration certificate, and a calibration sticker is affixed to the calibrated instrument. Only ISO 17025 accredited calibration guarantees that testing is conducted using testing equipment certified by an international accreditation body. The traceability system diagram is structured to show the hierarchy from the standard instruments used in the inspection factory to the testing standards and national standards. Measurement uncertainty is documented by clarifying not only factors of measurement error such as hysteresis and variation but also measurement deviation and the uncertainty of the standard instrument. Compared to general calibration, ISO 17025 accredited calibration is more accurate, widely applicable, and internationally recognized. For general calibration, the difference in the measuring instrument is determined by considering only hysteresis. Calibration at the time of factory shipment is issued as an inspection certificate in accordance with DIN / EN10204.

Free membership registrationThere are two methods for calibrating temperature measuring instruments such as dial thermometers, resistance thermometers (Pt100 and Pt1000), and thermocouples: fixed point calibration and comparative calibration. ■ Fixed Point Calibration Through a unique three-point calibration, the most accurate calibration at temperature fixed points is achieved. The triple point refers to the condition where the three phases of a substance are in thermodynamic equilibrium. For water, the triple point is defined as 0.01°C according to the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90). This means that the quantitative ratio of liquid water, water vapor, and ice remains unchanged. Reaching the triple point requires a significant amount of time and effort, but once achieved, it can maintain a stable temperature for a long period. By achieving a constant temperature condition, the deviation of the thermometer can be verified most accurately. Fixed point calibration is performed with the target thermometer used as a reference thermometer, meeting the requirements for reproducibility and high precision. ■ Comparative Calibration This method involves comparing the thermometer being calibrated with a reference thermometer that has been calibrated by a higher authority. Comparative calibration is conducted using a constant temperature bath, block gauge, or electric furnace. The probe of the thermometer being calibrated is inserted into the calibration device, and the instrument deviation is recorded at several calibration points in comparison to the reference thermometer. The use of a traceable reference thermometer allows for calibration at various required levels of accuracy.

Free membership registrationThe WIKA-Cal calibration software is designed to create calibration certificates for pressure measuring devices and logger protocols, with a demo version available for free download. Calibration certificates can be created using the Cal-Template, and logger protocols can be created using the built-in template system of the Log-Template software. The pre-installed demo version switches to the full version when a paid USB stick is inserted, and as long as the USB stick is connected to the computer, the data logger functionality remains available at all times. When selecting a template, all documents automatically display easily understandable values from the database. However, if customers generate a new document layout based on the template, they can create it in their own layout in the document view. Meanwhile, the software retrieves previously created information from the SQL database, allowing for data addition during the generation of certificates.

Free membership registrationWhat is a thermocouple? What are the types of thermocouples? How high can thermocouples be used in Celsius and Fahrenheit? This content explains these topics. Generally, in the industrial sector, either resistance temperature detectors or thermocouples are used for temperature measurement. A thermocouple consists of two different metals that are connected at the measurement point. Thermocouples with a solid weld of the two dissimilar metals have high vibration resistance, making them commonly used in the industry. When the temperature at the thermocouple measurement point rises or falls, the electron density of the two metals changes. This change in electron density generates a voltage at the output connection point. Thermocouples operate based on the principle of comparative measurement. In other words, the temperature at the measurement point is expressed as a thermoelectric voltage relative to the temperature at the output connection point. Since temperature measurement at the measurement point cannot be done with just the temperature difference, cold junction compensation is necessary. This ensures that the measurement results are not affected by the ambient temperature around the connection terminals. 00:00 Introduction 00:04 How does a thermocouple work? 00:55 Cold junction compensation 01:25 Voltage curve of thermocouples and material pairing 01:58 Types of thermocouples

Free membership registrationWhat are temperature resistance thermometers, Pt100 sensors, and Pt1000 sensors? What are the differences between Pt100 and Pt1000 temperature resistance thermometers? This video explains these differences in electric thermometers. Generally, there are two types of electric thermometers used: temperature resistance thermometers and thermocouples. In temperature resistance thermometers, temperature is measured using a resistance thermometer that measures ohmic values. The "Pt" in Pt100 represents the chemical element platinum, and the 100 indicates the resistance value of the sensor at 0 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the most commonly used measuring resistor, Pt100, means that its electrical resistance is 100Ω (ohms) at 0°C. For special applications, Pt1000 temperature sensors are also used. The change in electrical resistance due to temperature rise and fall conforms to the characteristic curve defined by international standards. Temperature can be measured with very high accuracy based on the measured resistance value. 0:00 Introduction 0:12 Operating principle of temperature resistance thermometers 0:47 Measurement range of platinum temperature resistance thermometers 1:21 Temperature resistance thermometers: Accuracy and standard measurement range 1:57 Pt100 temperature sensor: Industrial standards 2:10 Pt1000 and Pt25: Special specifications

Free membership registrationThe drift of temperature resistance thermometers and temperature sensors refers to a temporary or permanent decrease in accuracy under specific conditions. Drift can occur due to various factors such as vibrations, extreme temperature loads, and humidity, leading to operational issues in the system, which can cause malfunctions or failures and may result in permanent damage. To detect permanent drift, regular calibration is necessary. To reduce risks, calibration intervals should be conducted over short spans. WIKA offers comprehensive calibration services in the field and in the lab to ensure accurate temperature measurements. #TemperatureResistanceThermometer #TemperatureSensor #Calibration #TemperatureMeasurement #PlatinumResistanceThermometer #EquipmentCalibration #RTD #TemperatureProbe #pt100 #pt1000 0:00 Intro 0:08 - What is the difference between permanent drift and temporary drift? 0:30 - How does vibration affect drift? 0:48 - What causes drift in temperature resistance thermometers under extreme temperatures? 1:16 - How does moisture affect drift? 1:27 - Solutions for drift in temperature resistance thermometers 1:37 - WIKA Calibration Services

Free membership registrationIn this video, we will introduce the mechanism of electric thermometers and the reasons why signals often become weak or distorted. Temperature transmitters are also known as temperature converters. Temperature transmitters convert weak sensor signals into safe and powerful standardized output signals. The output signal can be either analog or digital. By using transmitters, processes become more efficient, and safety is significantly improved. They can also be used in hazardous areas and safety-related zones. #WIKA #ElectricTransmitter #TemperatureTransmitter #TemperatureConverter #TemperatureSensor #ResistanceTemperatureDetector #Transmitter #ProcessSafety #IndustrialProcess #MeasurementAccuracy 0:00 How does an electric thermometer work? 0:21 How does a temperature transmitter work? 0:30 What are transmitters used for? 0:48 What is an analog output signal? 0:56 What is a digital output signal? 1:09 Use of digital transmitters 1:27 What are the advantages of transmitters? 1:43 WIKA offers a variety of transmitters in its product lineup!
