Even the best experimental labs cannot replicate actual process conditions, and testing in real plants can be inefficient and sometimes impossible. To test under specific conditions and configurations, WIKA USA has built its own full-size process unit equipped with a reactor and a heating furnace. For thermometers used in process plants, the ideal scenario is to test them in real plants, but the issues are time, cost, and practicality. Refineries and petrochemical plants need to continue operations to maintain profitability, and downtime must be limited to maintenance and repairs only. Testing of thermometers is scheduled during downtime, starting at the beginning of regular maintenance and sometimes conducted before the next scheduled maintenance. The problem is that regular maintenance cycles often exceed four years, leading to prolonged periods without testing.

The WIKA R&D Center, equipped with process units comparable to those in a refinery, can perform various tests and validations that were previously impossible. It not only adjusts measuring instruments to real conditions but also reproduces actual problems that end-user units occasionally experience (such as uneven temperature distribution, hotspots, and channeling) to see how these conditions affect the thermometers. This 6,000 square foot facility consists of reactors and heating furnaces, with data collection and analysis conducted in a control management room, continuously circulating heat transfer fluids. Engineers at the R&D Center operate the testing equipment in collaboration with customers, starting and stopping tests without interrupting or shutting down the customer's plant.
