I want to install security cameras at the entrance and inside the factory. However, many factory managers face challenges such as "there's no space to set up poles for the cameras" and "the construction costs are too high to get the budget approved." At AGC Glass Products Co., Ltd.'s Kurume Factory, we have introduced the "Mihalmo" camera, which can be installed on the inside of windows to capture images from the outside, achieving enhanced security with zero construction and in a short period. ◆Common Challenges in Installing Security Cameras in Factories When considering the installation of security cameras in factories, managers often encounter the following difficulties: 1. The entrances and exits of factories have a lot of vehicle traffic and loading/unloading activities, making it difficult to secure space for pole-mounted cameras. Installing on walls also requires anchor work into concrete structures, leading to extensive construction that cannot be avoided. 2. Outdoor security cameras require not only waterproof and weather-resistant housing costs but also power supply, wiring work, and pole foundation construction. The installation costs can reach several hundred thousand yen per unit, making it challenging to get budget approval. 3. In cases where cameras are only needed for a limited period during factory construction or inventory periods, or if there is a desire to change the installation location later, fixed installation cameras that require construction make flexible responses difficult.

AGC Inc. and Kitakyushu City conducted a demonstration experiment utilizing the window-mounted camera "Mihalmo" for security camera purposes to promote local safety and security. We will introduce a new security model use case that has successfully overcome the barriers of "high installation costs," "installation negotiations," and "large-scale construction" that traditional outdoor cameras faced, through the innovative idea of sticking it on the inside of a window, achieving approximately a 60% reduction in installation costs.

AGC, the Japan Meteorological Association, and Tsukigata Town in Hokkaido conducted a demonstration experiment combining real-time images obtained from an outdoor camera called "Mihalmo," installed on windows (indoor side), with AI from the Japan Meteorological Association. This experiment aimed to predict whiteout occurrences and visibility forecasts for up to one hour in Tsukigata Town, which were communicated through digital signage. (December 2024 - March 2025) Surveys conducted after this demonstration experiment suggested a certain effectiveness in reducing the risk of traffic accidents during winter. Here, we will introduce how the demonstration experiment utilizing "Mihalmo" has contributed to alleviating actual concerns. *1 Whiteout... Originally refers to a phenomenon where the ground is covered in snow and the sky is obscured by thin clouds, making the surroundings appear uniformly white, thus making it impossible to distinguish between the sky and the ground. It is also used to describe a phenomenon where visibility is completely obstructed by snow or blizzards, rendering the surroundings completely invisible. At this time, the area becomes entirely white, making it nearly impossible for drivers to see the road or obstacles ahead, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. A whiteout specifically refers to a state of significantly poor visibility and often occurs in cold regions like Hokkaido during winter.

This Service combines AGC's window-mounted camera "Mihalmo" with the Japan Meteorological Association's image AI judgment technology to provide real-time weather information with images to local residents. This will help prevent snow damage-related accidents in Nishikawa Town, known for its heavy snowfall, and contribute to ensuring the safety of residents' lives. Furthermore, based on the results of this Service, we aim to expand it to municipalities across the country that experience heavy snowfall in the future.

AGC (AGC Inc., headquartered in Tokyo, President: Yoshinori Hirai), the Japan Meteorological Association (General Incorporated Foundation Japan Meteorological Association, headquartered in Tokyo, Chairman: Kazuhiro Watanabe), and Tsukigata Town in Hokkaido (Mayor: Ryuichi Uesaka) concluded a demonstration experiment (hereinafter referred to as this experiment) on the prediction of whiteout occurrences and real-time information dissemination technology in Tsukigata Town, which was announced in December 2024, on March 31, 2025. A post-implementation survey confirmed changes among local residents, including those in Tsukigata Town, regarding alterations in travel plans and heightened awareness of safe driving, revealing that this initiative contributed to reducing the risk of traffic accidents during winter. In this experiment, the following initiatives were undertaken to reduce the risk of winter traffic accidents caused by whiteouts: 1) Real-time image data acquisition of the target section using AGC's window-mounted camera "Mihalmo." 2) Based on the data from 1), an AI developed by the Japan Meteorological Association determined visibility (the distance one can see) within the past hour every 15 minutes. 3) Combining the visibility information from 2) with the latest weather information, the Japan Meteorological Association predicted visibility up to six hours ahead on an hourly basis. 4) The information from 1) to 3) was disseminated through digital signage at two public facilities in Tsukigata Town.

In the previous year's fireworks festival, Okazaki City faced two main challenges regarding security monitoring: - High construction costs associated with the installation of outdoor cameras for short-term use - Delays in video transmission from the cameras due to the influence of the communication environment, making real-time monitoring difficult "Mihalmo" is an outdoor camera that can be easily installed on the interior side of building windows and is also easy to remove. Since it does not require the installation work necessary for conventional outdoor cameras, it allows for cost-effective deployment and is suitable for short-term use. Additionally, the local BWA system of Okazaki City was utilized for real-time video transmission. This enabled stable video transmission even in environments with high communication loads, such as during events with increased attendance, and contributed to reducing the costs of new communication contracts.
