Today's ANSYS: Analysis of Water Purification Treatment Using UV Sterilization Equipment

Introduction to the analysis of water purification treatment using ultraviolet sterilization devices.

I would like to introduce information that highlights how CAE and CFD are beneficial to society, along with interesting application examples, primarily through articles from the information magazine "ADVANTAGE" published by ANSYS, Inc. and ANSYS Japan Co., Ltd. This time, I will discuss the analysis of water purification treatment using ultraviolet sterilization devices. ANSYS Fluent is equipped with numerous radiation models, and in this case, we will simulate using the DO model and model various microorganisms with DPM (Lagrangian), which is a somewhat unique example. When I first saw this case, I thought it might not fall within the realm of CFD (fluid analysis), but depending on how it is used, there seems to be potential for increased applications. We will incorporate the total amount of ultraviolet light (UV Dose) that bacteria receive while flowing through the ultraviolet sterilization device using a UDF (User Defined Function). In the tap water we use and drink in our daily lives, ultraviolet irradiation devices are reportedly always used for sterilization (to kill chlorine-resistant bacteria such as Cryptosporidium). In other words, if we could improve the sterilization efficiency by even an average of 1% at the countless water purification plants across the country, it would create a significant impact.

PumpLinx is a fluid analysis software designed to calculate the transient characteristics of various volumetric pumps, compressors, and valves. It is developed based on the thermal fluid analysis software Simerics MP and utilizes all the features of Simerics MP. 【The following fluid analyses are possible】 ■ Free surface flow ■ Flow considering the compressibility of air contained in liquids ■ Pressure pulsation and water hammer effects ■ Coupling of pump flow with the rigid body motion of valves and cam rings ■ Flow in low to medium vacuum conditions ■ Compressible flow (subsonic) ■ Cavitation ■ Time variations of flow field (velocity vectors, pressure), flow rate, fluid forces, and torque The greatest strength is the ability to automatically create meshes with clearances in the µm range, which is difficult for other general-purpose fluid analysis software!!
