Power generation efficiency improved by 7.7%! A case where the decline in power generation due to panel dirt was improved through photocatalytic treatment.

We would like to introduce a case study of photocatalytic application as a measure to prevent dirt on solar panels. On the rooftop of a spinning factory, photocatalytic treatment was applied to one of three panels of the same specification, resulting in a 7.7% improvement in power generation efficiency for the photocatalytic panel. The degradation of power generation due to panel dirt was improved through the photocatalytic application. Additionally, it has been verified that the light transmittance of glass increased by over 3%. What is a photocatalyst?

"Photocatalysts" are materials that decompose organic substances when exposed to light, exhibiting effects such as anti-fouling, deodorization, and antibacterial properties. When titanium dioxide is exposed to light (ultraviolet), electrons (e-) and holes (h+) are generated. These electrons and holes react with oxygen and water in the air, producing reactive oxygen species such as superoxide anion (O2-) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) on the surface of titanium dioxide. These reactive oxygen species possess strong oxidative power, removing and decomposing organic substances, thereby demonstrating anti-fouling, deodorization, and antibacterial effects. Dr. OHNO develops "visible light responsive titanium oxide nanomaterials."

We have developed a "visible light responsive titanium dioxide nanomaterial" that reacts with high performance even under weak indoor lighting!

In the development of indoor high-performance titanium dioxide, there was a significant issue that needed to be resolved. The oxidation and reduction reactions (opposite reactions) were occurring simultaneously on the surface of the photocatalyst, leading to a substantial decrease in performance due to the reverse reaction. Furthermore, the photocatalytic effect could only be activated by ultraviolet light, rendering it ineffective under indoor lighting. In response, a research team led by Professor Yokono began developing next-generation titanium dioxide materials that can exhibit photocatalytic functions under indoor light (such as LED light sources) that contains no ultraviolet rays.
