Ground reinforcement work | SMD method that facilitates smooth processing of confirmation applications with efficient approval procedures.
Ground reinforcement work
The SMD method, which has ministerial certification and is optimal for structures subject to administrative guidance during the application for confirmation, such as those with a design bearing capacity exceeding 30 kN/m², existing retaining walls, and buildings with basements.
Ground reinforcement work is a foundational technology that physically prevents the risk of uneven settlement faced by building structures and ensures the long-term structural safety of buildings. The SMD pile method provided by Geotech Co., Ltd. is a highly reliable construction method certified by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, developed to address complex structures subject to building confirmation applications and administrative guidance. This method demonstrates its true value under stringent design conditions, such as buildings with basements where the design ground bearing capacity exceeds 30 kN/m², existing retaining walls requiring embedment to the angle of repose, and steel-framed buildings of 3 to 4 stories. In cases where ground improvement methods result in insufficient bearing capacity and precast pile installation leads to excessive specifications and high costs, it provides overwhelming end bearing capacity and excellent economic efficiency to solve these issues. It is equipped with an objective and clear bearing capacity calculation formula derived from standard penetration tests (N values), allowing for rapid and smooth passage through administrative reviews. We offer a consistent system from consultation to design support and on-site management, proposing safe and rational ground reinforcement solutions.

basic information
The SMD method is a technology that has obtained certification from the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (TACP-0112/0113, etc.) in response to administrative approvals. It consists of STK400/490 steel pipes with a main axis diameter of φ89.1mm to φ267.4mm and cast iron wings with an outer diameter 2 to 3 times larger (equivalent to SM490/SS400, etc.). A theoretical calculation formula based on the N value from standard penetration tests has been established, allowing for the evaluation of strata with a converted N value of 27 or less for cohesive soils and 60 or less for sandy soils as supporting layers. The maximum construction length reaches 130 times the axis diameter (up to a maximum of 34.8m), providing a reliable specification that greatly facilitates the preparation of calculation bases during the application for confirmation.

Applications/Examples of results
The SMD method demonstrates its effectiveness in construction projects where administrative approvals and technical guidance from government offices are stringent. Specifically, it is suitable for sites requiring basement designs with soil bearing capacities exceeding 30 kN/m², or where deep foundations need to be established up to the angle of repose (30°) adjacent to old retaining walls without inspection certificates. Additionally, it is ideal for commercial buildings with steel structures of 3 to 4 stories, reinforced concrete structures, and the foundation reinforcement of retaining walls or high-strength structures with design soil bearing capacities below 100 kN/m², where confirming strength through ground improvement methods is difficult and using precast PC piles would lead to excessive design. It is widely utilized for specialized applications aimed at streamlining administrative reviews and improving the efficiency of design work.
