In this column, we will discuss the issue of frost when using heat pumps for vehicle heating. As explained in the 16th column, heat pumps extract heat from the air, and the total of the extracted heat and the compression energy from the compressor is used as a heating source. When the outside air is cold, refrigerant at temperatures below minus 10°C passes through the outdoor unit, cooling the air with that refrigerant, which causes condensation, and the condensed water freezes. Over time, this begins to block the entire surface of the outdoor heat exchanger, resulting in no airflow and preventing heat exchange.
