[Column] Why is the drying process important? Wood drying is the foundation for ensuring housing quality.
Many residential complaints are due to quality issues related to drying. Wood exhibits excellent performance as a building material only when it undergoes proper drying. **Five Detriments of Poor Drying Quality** 1. **Dimensional Stability** Insufficiently dried wood can warp or bend during use, leading to splits and gaps. 2. **Strength Performance** Drying improves strength performance, such as bending strength. However, recent studies have reported a decrease in bending strength for wood dried at high temperatures for extended periods. Additionally, inadequately dried wood can lead to issues such as loose joints. 3. **Cracking** Wood can experience two types of cracking: surface cracking and internal cracking. - **Surface Cracking**: V-shaped cracks that appear early in the drying process. They have little impact on strength performance. - **Internal Cracking**: Cracks that occur within the wood later in the drying process. These are particularly pronounced when heartwood is dried at high temperatures for long periods. 4. **Discoloration** Artificial drying can darken the color of the wood, especially when dried at high temperatures for extended periods. 5. **Termite Resistance and Decay Resistance** Drying enhances termite resistance and decay resistance. However, recent research has shown that wood dried at high temperatures for long periods may experience a decline in both termite resistance and decay resistance.
