"Boring surveys" are the most fundamental method of geological investigation. By using a boring machine to excavate and observe the collected samples, the composition of the strata can be understood. Generally, a standard penetration test is conducted during excavation to measure the N value (an indicator of the relative density and hardness of the ground).
