The Marine Pollution Prevention Treaty globally regulates the sulfur content in fuel oil, and it has been decided that this regulation will be further strengthened after January 2020. As a countermeasure to this regulation, by installing a SOx scrubber that can remove sulfur content, it is possible to continue using high-sulfur C heavy oil, which has been the mainstay of conventional marine fuel.
