Verification of NMR Pipe Protector Effect at Yokohama City Waterworks Bureau Part 1

The Yokohama City Waterworks Bureau conducted a demonstration test to prevent the occurrence of red rust in water supply pipes and to solve the problem of decreased chlorine concentration in water due to red rust. This was verified using the water supply pipe in the bathroom of Room 102, which was vacant, in the Tsuzumi water reservoir's attached housing that was 20 years old at the time.
The piping materials used included polyethylene-lined steel pipes in the shared areas and resin pipes in the exclusive areas, where red rust was found at the pipe joint. The iron concentration in the stagnant water at the bathtub water supply faucet before installation was 0.27 mg/l, and the residual chlorine at that time was 0.11 ppm. Additionally, over the two weeks prior to installation (with water flowing for 3 hours a day), the amount of red rust collected on the faucet filter was 13 mg/l, indicating significant corrosion of red rust at the pipe joints.
After installing the NMR pipe protector on the water supply inlet piping (50A) for the entire Tsuzumi housing, the iron concentration in the stagnant water at the bathtub water supply faucet decreased to 0.15 mg/l after one week, while the residual chlorine increased to 0.56 ppm, five times higher than before installation.
The NMR pipe protector completely halted the deterioration of red rust, proving that the surface of the existing red rust transformed into passive black rust and that the reduction of chlorine stopped.

The NMR Pipe Protector® has been introduced in many buildings as a device for preventing red rust and extending the life of piping, and it has recently begun to attract attention in the water supply sector as well. This is due to the report of the results of a demonstration experiment conducted by the Yokohama City Waterworks Bureau at the Japan Water Works Association's water supply research presentation. The potential of the NMR Pipe Protector® in the water supply field has been featured in the Japan Water Newspaper, and we would like to introduce the content of that article this time.
