A New World of Asphalt

The history of asphalt is long and distant. It is said that Noah's Ark, as written in the Old Testament, was waterproofed with asphalt. In ancient Egypt, asphalt-paved roads already existed. Numerous tools and figurines made of asphalt can be found within Mesopotamian civilization. In Japan, it is stated in the Nihon Shoki that during the reign of Emperor Tenji, burnt earth (asphalt) and burnt water (oil) were presented to the court from the Niigata region. Thus, asphalt has been a valuable material used throughout a long history, but there are still many unknown aspects, holding endless possibilities. Shizureki is actively advancing scientific clarification and applied research on asphalt based on years of asphalt processing technology.
