During an earthquake, the dynamic liquid pressure caused by sloshing of the liquid surface in the tank acts on the container's side walls and bottom plate, resulting in damage to the tank and rocking vibrations that can cause parts of the bottom plate to lift, leading to tank damage. This case study utilized the virtual fluid boundary and phantom elements of NX Nastran to perform transient response analysis on three types of tanks, as shown in the figure on the right, using the seismic waves from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (M9).
