Nishikijo Hogo Co., Ltd. provided a tactile guidance mat for visually impaired individuals at tournaments organized by the Japan Blind Tennis Federation as part of its support for the federation. This support facilitated navigation at the venues. On July 14, 2017, a letter of appreciation was awarded by the Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency at the Commissioner’s office for the support provided to sports organizations for people with disabilities. How is support for visually impaired individuals in evacuation shelters expected to be provided? It is often assumed that operational staff will accompany them during movement and guide them to their destinations, such as restrooms. While this is very helpful, some individuals may feel reluctant to call for assistance every time they need to use the restroom and may hold back from going at their desired times. There may also be times when the operational staff are short-handed and cannot accompany everyone each time. In such cases, having a guiding path that allows visually impaired individuals to reach their destinations independently would be convenient.
