[Case Study] MTS Bionix Desktop Axial Servo Hydraulic Testing System

We are helping to pursue next-generation vertebral bone cement.

A team of 20 functional materials scientists at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Science and Technology in Uppsala, Sweden, is conducting various research on biomaterials and is currently focusing on research related to bone cement. Uppsala University has partnered with MTS to support bone cement research and has incorporated the MTS Model 858 Bionix tabletop axial servo hydraulic testing system into its functional materials science testing lab. By combining this system with the MTS Bionix EnviroBath environmental simulation system, it has become possible to apply various loads simultaneously to bone cement in a saline solution maintained at human body temperature. As a result, they successfully replicated the loads and conditions that the cement injected into a patient’s body would ultimately experience long after surgery. Customers have stated that with the introduction of the MTS Bionix testing solutions, they can dedicate more time to focusing on new formulations without worrying about the performance of the testing system or the reliability of the test data. [Case Study] Landmark Road Frame and Test Suite

We are assisting F1 teams through advanced software variable operations.

Formula One test engineers face some of the most demanding testing challenges in the world. For the UK-based Caterham F1 team, which entered the competition in 2010, conducting fast and flexible mechanical tests from the very beginning has been absolutely essential for the team's success. When it came time to select testing equipment for the newly completed Caterham F1 team's test lab, the test team leader chose MTS. Having used MTS's control systems and load frames for many years, he was already well acquainted with their performance. He was confident that MTS's hardware would provide the speed, accuracy, and flexibility his test team needed, enabling the continuous improvement of the Formula One team. Additionally, MTS TestSuite software brought competitiveness to the team in the high-pressure, quick-results environment characteristic of Formula One testing. [Case Study] MTS Bionix System

We support research in biomechanics by providing test data for orthopedic surgical techniques.

At the Excelen Center for Bone & Joint Research in Minneapolis, Minnesota, most tests, including spinal research, are conducted using three MTS testing devices. One of these, the MTS Bionix MTS 810 load frame, is still in regular use more than 30 years after its development. These devices operate in conjunction with the MTS FlexTest digital control system and MultiPurpose TestWare software. Customers state that the advantages of MTS hardware and software not only include a reduction in evaluation time for spinal motion but also an increase in the overall reproducibility of tests. They also add that the continuous collaboration between biomechanical engineers, surgeons, and MTS technical staff is essential for the validation of devices and surgical methods at Excelen. [Case Study] Shell Element Test System Upgrade

The expertise and technology of MTS played a crucial role in the success of the upgrade.

Professor Evan Bentz from the University of Toronto and a research group from the Mark Hagin Structural Research Institute are conducting cutting-edge research on the properties of reinforced concrete under harsh conditions. With recent significant advances in concrete materials science, the engineers at the institute began to feel the limitations of their research tool, the Shell Element Test (SET) system. They believed that to successfully upgrade the SET system, they needed a vendor who could first clarify what was possible, and then another vendor to implement it. They found a manufacturer that could achieve both simultaneously: MTS. By early 2010, the upgrade of the SET system was completed, and this static testing system effectively transformed into a dynamic testing system with enhanced durability and performance. The upgraded SET system now allows for simulations that closely resemble the actual operating conditions of today’s reinforced concrete structures. [Case Study] Addition of Step-Down Gearbox

We support the steady transition from OEM testing facilities to contracted testing labs.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG), based in Cologne, Germany, has utilized a wide range of high-performance testing equipment from MTS Systems Corporation since 2001 to meet the needs of its Formula One vehicle development. In 2009, TMG made the formal decision to make its testing capabilities and the expertise of its dedicated staff available to external customers. Instead of investing time and money into a new testing system, TMG explored ways to extend the versatility of its existing testing systems by modifying software and hardware. Over several weeks, TMG and MTS worked closely together to complete the technical modifications across the facility. A key modification was the addition of a step-down gearbox to TMG's custom transmission testing system. This was aimed at improving the accuracy of test lab evaluations by replicating the loads, pressures, and operating temperatures present in the gearbox environment. MTS was indispensable for the smooth transition from TMG's testing lab to the contracted testing facility. For more details, please contact us or refer to the catalog.

[Case Study] Introduction of MTS Hydraulics Program

It contributes to maintaining the accuracy of the equipment and the integrity of the test data at a very high level.

The George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) connects 14 earthquake research facilities across the United States through NEEShub, a user-demand-driven cyber infrastructure. A major challenge for NEES is the efficient maintenance and operation of mechanical testing and simulation testing systems used at member institutions. Efficient routine maintenance and calibration of testing systems are essential for consistently maintaining high levels of testing accuracy and system uptime. In 2005, MTS launched a comprehensive support program for member institutions that adopt MTS technology for seismic testing and simulation. The MTS Hydraulix program regularly monitors the cleanliness of the hydraulic fluid in testing systems as a means to prevent significant and costly mechanical issues in the future. MTS's certified calibration and adjustment services contribute to maintaining the accuracy of equipment and the integrity of test data at exceptionally high levels. [Case Study] Introduction of Material Testing System

Reduce the time for creating, setting up, and collecting data for test programs! Achieve improved productivity.

The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University uses a wide range of MTS equipment, software, and accessories in its Fatigue and Fracture Research Lab to support testing requirements. These include hydraulic servo load frames, FlexTest GT digital servo controllers, TestStar controllers, TestWorks and MultiPurpose TestWare (MPT) software, hydraulic sources, transducers, strain gauges, displacement gauges, and tensile and displacement measurement equipment. To maximize the benefits of MTS products, the Fatigue and Fracture Research Lab collaborated with the company's consulting team to learn how to fully utilize specific features and functions. Ultimately, MTS solutions reduced the time spent on creating test programs, setting up tests, and collecting test data, allowing NIAR to improve testing productivity. *For more details, please contact us or refer to the catalog.*

[Case Study] Upgrade of High-Temperature Material Testing Equipment

We support UCF in conducting mechanical tests in extreme environments.

The University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando has built a reputation for high-quality education and technological innovation since its establishment in 1963. In particular, the MMAE program at the university has established solid partnerships over the years with global manufacturers such as Siemens Power Generation, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, and Mitsubishi Power System, as well as institutions like the Kennedy Space Center. UCF has set a policy to expand its high-temperature materials testing facilities and make this field a cornerstone of research at the university. To enhance mechanical testing capabilities at high temperatures, it was necessary to equip a variety of instruments and tools, including load frames, control systems, and software, and a testing solution partner with expertise in integrating advanced systems was required. MTS was chosen for this purpose. Upgrading the materials characterization testing facilities in MMAE has brought significant benefits not only to students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science but also to UCF's commercial partners.
