Detection of minute plastic strain is possible through electrochemical treatment using nitric acid.

Until now, methods using magnetic, ultrasonic, X-ray, hardness, and other techniques have been known for detecting plastic strain. However, from the perspective of accuracy and quantitativeness, not all methods are established. On the other hand, for the aging degradation of metallic materials, there is an electrochemical method (anodic characteristics/electrochemical etching) with a clear principle for damage measurement. When a material is etched, if there is a disturbance in the atomic arrangement at the grain boundaries or if there are precipitates or impurities, those areas will selectively dissolve. In this invention, conditions were found under which twin areas preferentially dissolve through nitric acid etching in stainless steel, and a method was developed to evaluate the amount of plastic strain based on the density of etching marks.

The present invention relates to a radiation detection method and radiation detection device, as well as a positron emission tomography (PET) device equipped with a radiation detection device. Regarding the background of PET, high-performance types of detectors use radiation detectors made of CdTe crystals; however, they have issues such as being covalent crystals with a high melting point and high production costs. Therefore, thallium halides like TlBr, which are inexpensive, have gained attention as alternative materials to CdTe. Thallium bromide radiation detectors have a very high detection efficiency for gamma rays, but their coincidence timing resolution has been poor, leading to their underutilization until now. According to the present invention, a radiation detection device using a thallium bromide radiation detector with practical coincidence timing resolution is provided, as well as a positron emission tomography device equipped with the radiation detection device.
