In the past, electrostatic oil cleaning devices have been recommended as a measure to remove varnish from lubricating oil. While electrostatic oil cleaning seems effective, it eventually loses its ability to lower QSA and MPC values. The reason for this is that electrostatic oil cleaning devices only have the capability to remove insoluble substances, and they cannot eliminate the varnish that is extracted from the lubricating oil. What is certain about the varnish problem is that the oxidation byproducts of lubricating oil are varnish. The soluble contaminants, which are precursors to varnish, accumulate and cause chemical reactions, ultimately producing high molecular weight monomers and polymers, which extract varnish from the oil and lead to sludge deposition.
