Site Investigation | High-Precision Support Layer Penetration Survey Supporting Structural Calculations for Small-Site Steel Buildings
Ground investigation
A ram sounding survey to accurately obtain deep support layer data essential for structural calculations in a narrow steel building where large heavy machinery is not permitted.
In the construction of steel frame buildings on small plots in urban areas, accurately understanding the bearing layer is essential for designing foundations that can withstand high loads; however, the limitations of large boring machines pose a technical obstacle. This service employs a small crawler-type automatic ram sounding testing machine, providing a solution to complete high-precision deep bearing layer investigations even in densely populated urban areas. The fully automatic striking device allows a 63.5 kg hammer to free fall from 500 mm, automatically recording the Nd value for every 200 mm penetration, thereby continuously visualizing the bearing layer equivalent to an N value of 50 and the stratigraphic composition up to a maximum depth of 30 m. By applying friction correction through torque measurement, we provide high-precision data that can be directly compared to the N values from standard penetration tests, ensuring robust ground evidence necessary for structural calculations. Continuous measurements at multiple locations capture the inclination and thickness variations of the bearing layer, enabling the design of optimal pile lengths on a unit basis, achieving safe and economical foundation quality, and guaranteeing the long-term safety of the building.

basic information
This test is a sounding survey that employs an automatic continuous penetration method (such as YBM's CRS12). A hammer with a mass of 63.5 ± 0.5 kg is automatically dropped from a height of 500 ± 10 mm to penetrate a cone with an outer diameter of 45 mm and a tip angle of 90 degrees. The number of impacts Nd is recorded for every 200 mm of penetration, and when the number of impacts exceeds 5 Nd, the automatic measurement of the rod rotation torque Mv (N·cm) is conducted, followed by a calculation correction (Nd = Nd - 0.00041 Mv) to account for the effects of circumferential friction. The dimensions of the self-propelled crawler machine are a total width of 830 to 1000 mm and a total height of 2350 to 2570 mm, capable of measuring depths up to 30 m.

Applications/Examples of results
It is suitable for new ground surveys of steel frame buildings, low to mid-rise apartments, and commercial stores on narrow sites where large boring machines and scaffolding cannot be set up due to limited site width. It is mainly used in pile foundation design methods such as steel pipe pile method, ETP-G method, and tiger pile method to confirm the depth of the bearing layer (N value of 50 or more) and to understand the inclination. Additionally, it is widely used in structural design practice for obtaining evidence of ground evaluation in building confirmation applications and structural reviews, determining the allowable bearing capacity of deep layers in deformed ground after demolition, and optimizing costs to prevent excessive pile length design.
