As a screening analysis for total PFAS, we are conducting an analysis of total fluorine content using combustion ion chromatography.
In Europe, the "Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR)" came into effect in February 2025. It will be applicable throughout the EU from August 12, 2026, and will restrict the use of PFAS in food contact packaging materials. Additionally, under the framework of the REACH regulation, a proposal is being considered to restrict the manufacture, marketing, and use (including import) of over 10,000 types of PFAS. If the regulation comes into effect, exporting products to Europe will require proof that even products that do not seem to have contact with PFAS are below the regulatory limit (total PFAS: 50 mg/kg as F).

basic information
The sample is burned in a combustion furnace at approximately 1000°C, and the fluorine gas generated from the decomposition of PFAS is captured in an absorbent solution as fluoride ions. The absorbent solution is analyzed using ion chromatography to measure the amount of fluoride ions. The quantification limit is 10 ppm, and the target samples can include various types such as solids, liquids, resins, oils, and fibers.
