"Nara-kare" refers to the damage caused when the Kashi no Nagaki Kui Mushi (hereafter referred to as Kashi-naga) launches a concentrated attack (mass attack) on trees, leading to their death. Kashi-naga traps are tools designed to protect forests by increasing the number of surviving trees that have endured Kashi-naga infestation within the forest. About half of the trees that have been attacked by Kashi-naga become surviving infested trees. Kashi-naga that infest these surviving trees die due to the tree's resistance (sap), while Kashi-naga that infest trees that have died from the attack successfully reproduce, and their offspring cause damage the following year.
