Clarification of the asphalt modification mechanism by adding SBS! Introduction to asphalt modification technology.
The modification of asphalt is an important technology related to high-performance asphalt products, and fundamental research in this area is essential for the development of modification techniques. The base asphalt has a complex phase structure composed of multiple components, making the measurement of its physical properties difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to consider various factors when developing measurement methods for the physical property analysis of asphalt and modified asphalt. Our company has contributed to the elucidation of the modification mechanisms of asphalt through collaborative research with universities. Here are some of the results. [Elucidation of the asphalt modification mechanism using SBS] - SBS is one of the representative resins used as a modifier for asphalt. - Significant modification effects can be achieved with a small addition of less than 10 wt% of SBS. - Measurements were conducted focusing on the changes in the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the styrene block and butadiene block of SBS, as well as the maltenes and asphaltenes that are components of asphalt. - It has been clarified that the high molecular weight component asphaltene mainly partially miscible with the PS block. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

basic information
"Creation of a thermally stable oil gel mimicking the structure of modified asphalt" ■ Application of the mechanism by which PS blocks, PB blocks, and asphalt components such as asphaltene and maltene selectively dissolve in SBS modified asphalt. ■ Considering the compatibility of SBS with PS blocks and PB blocks predicted from solubility parameters, heat-resistant resins and solvents were selected for the experiments. ■ When SBS is mixed with an oil solvent above a certain concentration, the PS blocks of SBS aggregate in the oil solvent, forming a network structure and gelation occurs. ■ The thermally stable oil gel using heat-resistant resins has a softening point that is 30°C higher than that of conventional SBS oil gels, providing heat resistance that can be utilized as functional materials over a wide temperature range. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.*

The history of asphalt is long and distant. It is said that Noah's Ark, as written in the Old Testament, was waterproofed with asphalt. In ancient Egypt, asphalt-paved roads already existed. Numerous tools and figurines made of asphalt can be found within Mesopotamian civilization. In Japan, it is stated in the Nihon Shoki that during the reign of Emperor Tenji, burnt earth (asphalt) and burnt water (oil) were presented to the court from the Niigata region. Thus, asphalt has been a valuable material used throughout a long history, but there are still many unknown aspects, holding endless possibilities. Shizureki is actively advancing scientific clarification and applied research on asphalt based on years of asphalt processing technology.
