Radiographic testing is an inspection method applicable to both metallic and non-metallic materials. When radiation (X-rays) is applied to a test specimen, such as a steel weld, the areas with defects inside the weld will allow more radiation to pass through than the sound areas. If this X-ray is captured on a photosensitive material like film and developed, the defects will appear darker on the film than the sound areas. The presence or absence of defects is determined by this density difference.
