In 2021, the issue of metal foreign substances in vaccines came to light, highlighting the challenge of removing metal foreign substances not only in the food industry but also in the manufacturing processes of pharmaceuticals. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Social Welfare and Public Health, there were 4,440 food complaints in the fiscal year 2020. Of these, 535 complaints were due to foreign substances. In the same year, the Food Analysis and Development Center conducted foreign substance inspections at the request of businesses, and it was reported that approximately 21.8% of what was recognized as "foreign substances" were metal foreign substances. This indicates that "metal foreign substance contamination" is a prevalent issue.
