Three workers were engaged in the replacement of the backflow prevention valve for the water supply pipe installed in the pump well. While using a submersible pump powered by a gasoline engine to draw water, exhaust gases accumulated in the pump well, causing the three workers to report feeling unwell and lose consciousness. Two victims who remained in the pump well were rescued by staff from the water purification plant.
