A test cylinder adhered to the coating is pulled using hydraulic pressure, allowing for a mechanically stable measurement of the adhesion strength between the substrate and the coating.
The coating adhesion tester, known as the Adhesion Tester, is a testing machine used to measure the adhesion (bonding) between the coating and the substrate. According to JIS standards, "the cross-cut test should not be considered a means of measuring adhesion." The cross-cut test involves making cuts through the coating down to the substrate with a cutter, applying tape, and then pulling off the tape to evaluate the coating's resistance to delamination from the substrate, with the test results being a pass or fail determined by the visual inspection of the tester. The Adhesion Tester can measure the tensile force required for adhesive failure between the coating and the substrate by pulling a test cylinder attached to the coating, allowing for the measurement of adhesion strength between the substrate and the coating. Additionally, conducting this test daily can reveal trends towards defects based on changes in adhesion strength values. It accommodates various sizes of dollies, and the rate of tensile increase and test duration can be set via a touch panel. It is equipped with a rechargeable battery, making it portable for testing at painting sites.

basic information
Apply adhesive evenly to the surface of the newly cleaned test cylinder (dolly). Bond the adhesive-coated surface of the test cylinder until the adhesive cures. After the adhesive has cured, carefully cut around the test cylinder down to the substrate using a dolly cutter. Clamp the test cylinder (dolly) in the pulling section of the adhesion tester. Start the adhesion tester and apply tension, ensuring that the specimen fails within 90 seconds at a tension increase rate not exceeding 1 MPa/s, and record the tension at which the specimen fails. The tension increase rate, maximum tension increase limit, and maximum tension hold time can be set arbitrarily.
