In 1879, when Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb in America, it coincided with the founding year of Nagata, which was the 12th year of the Meiji era, and both are related to "bamboo." Edison, who first lit a bulb with a bamboo filament, famously said, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration," but Nagata's business also began with the founder Daisuke Nagata's inspiration of "Could bamboo be sold abroad?"
