Collect valuable data on manta rays, which have rarely been studied, and cooperate in building a foundation for long-term monitoring of their habitat.
Looking to the future, manta rays could become an excellent indicator species for monitoring environmental changes in the world's oceans and coral reefs, due to their global distribution and easily recognizable appearance. Global warming has caused significant changes in the state of the Earth's oceans. All changes, including shifts in sea temperature, ocean current patterns, and ocean acidification, could have dramatic effects on the distribution, migration, and behavior of manta rays, as well as on the coral reefs that support their lives. Investigating the relationship between manta ray distribution and migration and large-scale oceanic changes will help researchers monitor and assess the health of the oceans on our planet.

basic information
**Volunteer Roles** - Take photographs for individual identification of manta rays, process the images for the database, and compare them with existing photos for identification. - Set up underwater receiving stations to record the movements of manta rays tagged with acoustic tags, and use underwater microphones to investigate the presence or absence of manta vocalizations. - Investigate the feeding habits of manta rays by collecting plankton samples and analyzing them by towing plankton nets from a boat at various diving locations and offshore. - As part of behavioral research, create a catalog of manta ray behaviors (ethogram: extracting specific behavioral patterns unique to that species). Volunteers will film manta ray behaviors to be added to the catalog. - During behavior observation, record instances where manta rays are found with different species of cleaning fish (such as cleaner wrasses that eat parasites off the bodies of large fish) and map the locations around coral reefs where they are cleaned. Company information
Since its inception, enthusiastic Earthwatch fans have emerged around the world. The main reason for this is that ordinary citizens without special skills voluntarily participate in field research, working under the guidance of world-class scientists, and can experience "the state of the Earth" firsthand. In other words, it is the largest organization in the world that connects the forefront of science (field research) with the general public. The primary goal of Earthwatch is to investigate and record changes on Earth through the "scientific lens" and to create a "knowledge base" necessary for a sustainable future. It does not impose or enforce any ideologies, principles, or claims. Based on scientific data, it communicates and proposes solutions to humanity's challenges from a fair standpoint. Earthwatch Japan supports field research by Japanese scientists in the most effective way, aligned with Japan's needs and current situation, to address common human problems. It mobilizes volunteers for these research projects and also sends volunteers to overseas projects as part of international cooperation activities.
