[Case Study] Detecting Signs of Illness in Cows Using IoT

An important factor in managing the health of cows is effectively monitoring their rumination. Generally, cows ruminate for about 6 to 10 hours a day, but there can be extreme changes in rumination time as a precursor to estrus or changes in health.
Particularly in the two months before and after calving, there are many accidents involving mother cows, and due to changes in health, they may be unable to give birth or may fall ill. Therefore, it is necessary to quickly recognize the signs of health changes, and an IoT technology solution for managing cow injuries and illnesses has been developed.
By attaching a vibration-powered beacon to the cow's jaw, the beacon generates power through the up-and-down movement of the jaw during feeding and rumination, emitting radio waves.
Additionally, an IoT gateway is installed to receive the beacon's radio waves, and data is transferred to the cloud from there. The responsible personnel can now monitor the health status of the cows in real-time using tablets or smartphones.
