The Atacama Desert in Chile has ideal conditions for astronomical observation, being cool, dry, and free of clouds, and several telescopes have already been installed there. An observatory with the world's largest telescope is being built on Cerro Armazones Mountain at an elevation of 3,046 meters, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.
