Now, "hook and loop fasteners," which everyone may have used at least once, do you know when and where they were born? It was an event in Switzerland in 1948. Swiss inventor George de Mestral, who was out hunting in the mountains with his dog, noticed that many wild burdock seeds were stuck to his clothes and his dog's fur. Curious, he took the seeds home and looked at them under a microscope. He discovered that the seeds were made up of countless hooks that clung tightly to clothing and dog fur. Inspired by this structure, he began developing a fastener that could be easily attached and detached. After years of trial and error, he created a fastener made of special nylon threads, consisting of countless hooks and loops. This was the birth of the hook and loop fastener. In Japan, our company applied for a patent in 1958, registered the trademark "Magic Tape" in 1960, and began sales. In 1964, it was adopted for the headrest covers of the Shinkansen, which led to its use in various applications such as blood pressure cuffs and sneakers, continuing to this day.

We have newly developed the "Magic Band" soft type, which reduces thickness by 25% compared to conventional products. The soft type uses a flexible resin and is finished thinly, making it easier to wrap around narrow items. Kurare Fastening was the first in Japan to start a hook-and-loop fastener business and has continued to develop and produce "Velcro" based on domestic production facilities up to the present day. Kuraray Fastening has established a manufacturing method using 100% polyester without a back coating agent and has obtained a patent for it. This has opened up a breakthrough in global standards. This method eliminates the need for polyurethane back coating, which is required for traditional hook-and-loop fasteners, and has successfully reduced CO2 emissions by lowering energy consumption during the process. (A significant amount of energy was required for the heating process to promote the drying and cross-linking reactions of the back coating agent.) Now, all products of "Velcro" are produced using this method. As a result, the hook-and-loop fastener industry has actively pursued efforts to reduce environmental impact, becoming the first to obtain the "EcoLeaf Environmental Label." Furthermore, in 2022, a new recycled type was launched. It uses polyester yarn derived from recycled PET resin made from used plastic bottles as part of the raw materials, and since it is 100% polyester without a back coating, material recycling is possible. The hook-and-loop fastener "Velcro" balances performance and environmental considerations. Kuraray Fastening will continue to advance "more human-friendly and more earth-friendly manufacturing."

This product is a hook-and-loop fastener with high heat resistance, utilizing PPS fibers in almost all the threads of the hook part, loop part, and base fabric part. Even after being left in a high-temperature environment (250°C) for 24 hours, the engagement strength (shear strength) retains over 80%. "Majirock" has an engagement force (stickiness) that is about 2 to 3 times that of standard fabric hook-and-loop fasteners.
