[Video Now Available] Snow Melting Test Status at a Certain Unmanned Management Facility

We carried out snow melting equipment construction for unmanned management facilities within Niigata Prefecture. The work targeted vehicle parking spaces, internal work pathways, and stair areas. Due to the difficulty of regular fuel supply at unmanned facilities, the construction involved the installation of snow melting mats with built-in electric heaters. The total output of the snow melting mats is 15.6 kW (single-phase 200V specification, with 100V specification in some locations). The on/off control is based on the amount of snowfall detected by a laser light sensor, activating when the outside temperature is below 2°C and the snowfall exceeds 5 cm, and deactivating when the snowfall decreases to below 3 cm. With a communication network connection, remote monitoring and control from outside are possible, and even if the sensor malfunctions, it can be forcibly activated or deactivated. During trial operation adjustments, we recorded the heating situation from above, and the overall heating condition was found to be good.

This time, we would like to introduce Niigata Sanrin in Tokamachi City. With the rebuilding of their office building, we implemented snow melting for the roof and pavement. Tokamachi City is one of the snowiest areas in the country, with a maximum snow depth of 210 cm in February. Sanrin is a fuel supply company, and tank trucks come and go at the fueling station multiple times a day. Since it would be impossible for employees to clear the snow every time, we installed pavement snow melting and roof snow melting for both the office building and the fueling station canopy, eliminating the need for manual snow removal. Sanrin sells both kerosene and propane gas, but this time we used a gas-fired boiler powered by propane gas, which has a relatively low environmental impact, for the hot water circulation system. Compared to the surrounding snow accumulation, both the roof and pavement are beautifully cleared of snow. We are here to assist with any snow-related issues for both new and existing homes.

Jōkamachi City is a town with a population of about 50,000, located near Nagano Prefecture, where the deepest snow accumulation in February is 210 cm (1991-2020). When trying to cope with this using electric heater-type snow melting, a large energy requirement of 300 to 350 W per square meter is needed. Therefore, even for a house of about 30 tsubo (approximately 100 square meters), a 30 kW class system is necessary, and in both heavy and light snowfall years, the basic fee will be a burden according to the equipment capacity. In contrast, a hot water circulation system using a boiler or similar as a heat source can freely adjust the output through temperature control, making it more cost-effective for fuel in light snowfall years, which is suitable for heavy snowfall areas. We received a consultation from Mr. Y in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, regarding "icicles falling from the north side of the large roof onto the neighboring house." Nagaoka City is the second largest city in Niigata Prefecture, with a population of about 280,000. The maximum snow depth in February is 77 cm (from 1991 to 2020). Looking at the surrounding scenery, there is quite a significant amount of snowfall. Initially, we considered a hot water circulation system, but since the area of concern was only the north side and it was just a part of the roof, we opted for a lightweight electric heating net system. The electric heating net is suitable for preventing icicles, is lightweight, and can be retrofitted to existing buildings. Even in the thermal imaging footage, only the areas with the net are melting like a pond. We also combined it with an automatic snow detection sensor that operates during the night or when going out. "We are really glad that we no longer have to worry about icicles and snow causing trouble for our neighbors starting this year!" was the joyful feedback we received.
