We would like to introduce a case study of the modification of "refrigerated and frozen containers for marine use" undertaken by Foods Tech Co., Ltd. The raw materials delivered were temporarily stored in a frozen state until use, but since the container had doors on only one side, it was necessary to repeatedly load and unload the pallets inside. As a solution, the freezer unit was relocated to the ceiling, and a door was added to the side with the freezer unit, enabling a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system with both doors. This ensures that materials are used in the order they were received, allowing for the use of older raw materials and significantly reducing labor. A groundbreaking method creates a windless environment with constant high temperature and humidity (over 98%) inside the storage, remarkably extending the freshness of vegetables, fruits, and flowers, contributing to the reduction of food waste.

To store freshly harvested items for a long time in a refrigerator or similar environment, it is necessary to create the same conditions as when they were cultivated. Using the traditional cooling method of blowing cold air causes the items being cooled to cool down while simultaneously drying out, which accelerates deterioration and leads to waste. Therefore, the "constant temperature and humidity container" has corner pipes that are in contact with the walls inside the container, through which a coolant (brine) cooled by a chiller unit circulates, cooling the entire wall surface. This allows for cooling the stored items inside the container in a no-wind environment, preventing drying by cooling without breaking the moisture barrier surrounding vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Additionally, since the entire wall surface acts as a cooling body, it minimizes temperature fluctuations inside the container. Moreover, a special micro-mist humidification device maintains humidity levels above 98%. However, there is no occurrence of water droplets adhering to the surfaces of vegetables and fruits, nor is there any moisture in the cardboard, which is common in high-humidity environments. In this way, by maintaining the freshness and quality of freshly harvested items for an extended period and reducing waste due to deterioration, we significantly contribute to the SDGs. The container had doors on only one side, which required rearranging the pallets to facilitate FIFO handling of frozen and refrigerated materials and products. To address this, we added a door on the exit side and installed a roller conveyor, allowing two pallets to be moved in parallel. This enabled us to consistently retrieve older materials and products, resulting in significant labor savings.
