A "ranma" is a type of decorative feature in traditional Japanese rooms that serves the functions of ventilation, air circulation, and decoration within partition walls. Until the Edo period, "ranma" was only permitted for use by the samurai class and a few wealthy merchants, making it a symbol of authority in addition to its decorative purpose. Even after entering the Showa era, there was a trend to incorporate luxurious carved ranma into two-room connected Japanese spaces. After the war, as Western-style and new Japanese-style houses increased, there was a rise in homes featuring simple kumiko ranma within mixed Japanese-Western spaces.
