Barrel polishing is a very suitable polishing technique for rounding the edges of machine parts and metal components. It is evaluated based on three factors: surface roughness, glossiness, and surface color, with customer requests such as "finer," "shinier," and "whiter." While surface roughness and corner radius are indicated in the drawings, requests regarding glossiness and color are mostly expressed in abstract terms. The shape of the surface irregularities, or surface characteristics, varies depending on the processing conditions and polishing materials used in our company. Since we do not have color difference meters or gloss meters, the evaluation is based on visual inspection rather than numerical assessment. This is a case study on the removal of black discoloration layers. We received an inquiry from another barrel polishing company stating, "We had barrel polishing done, and while the burrs were removed, the surface of the item was delivered discolored black compared to before the polishing. We cannot deliver it to our customer in this condition, so is there any way to restore the material's color?" We performed barrel polishing at our company, removing the black discoloration layer and returning it to the original material color. Depending on the type and amount of oil on the raw material before barrel polishing, as well as the polishing conditions, dirt can sometimes adhere to the surface. The original ultrasonic oscillation control probe allows for the utilization and control of nonlinear effects of ultrasonic vibrations. This is an effective ultrasonic utilization (control) technology tailored to applications such as processing, cleaning, surface modification, and promoting chemical reactions. There are interactions with the acoustic characteristics of cutting tools (drills, reamers, cutters, knives, etc.) and the size and material of cutting oils, jigs, and target objects, making the analysis (self-correlation, impulse response, contribution rate, bispectrum) complex. However, various optimizations based on the analysis results of sound pressure measurement data become possible.
