Press Die [Precision Die Parts Processing Example] Precision Machining Technology and Quality Assurance

Guaranteed with submicron order shape measurement! We will provide quality assurance in line with the improvement of precision machining technology.

We would like to introduce a case where a manufacturer of automotive parts solved their challenges by introducing a new machining center and wire electrical discharge machine. The manufacturer was facing issues such as "despite producing punches and dies through three-dimensional machining to accommodate the miniaturization and complexity of products, they were unable to create high-precision products," and "not only were defects occurring, but conventional measuring instruments were insufficient for shape measurement, making it impossible to guarantee accuracy." To address this, they ensured shape measurement that could not be achieved with traditional contact-type tracers by using a laser microscope. 【Overview】 ■ Customer's industry: Automotive parts manufacturing ■ Processing technology: Parts can be processed with an accuracy of ±2μm using the new machining center and wire electrical discharge machine ■ Quality assurance: Introduced three-dimensional measuring instruments (from Mitutoyo, OGP, TESA) and a laser microscope (from KEYENCE) to guarantee shape measurement in the sub-micron order *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Press Die Special Edition: Die Maker Column - Progressive Die Edition

In the mold shop column, we will continuously share various topics about molds! (We also publish the mold shop column on our company Instagram.)

In the previous column, I introduced that there are mainly three types of press molds, focusing on the single-stage mold. In this column, I will introduce the progressive mold! A progressive mold refers to a type that incorporates multiple processing methods, such as punching, bending, and drawing, into a single mold. This processing method sends the material to the next stage with each press, shaping the product. The material used is typically in a rolled form (coil material) and is automatically fed to the next stage. The advantages include improved production efficiency and stable quality due to automation, as well as the ability to perform more complex processing than single-stage molds since multiple processes can be incorporated. On the other hand, a disadvantage is that the mold design and manufacturing are more complex compared to single-stage molds, making the cost of mold production relatively high. Additionally, there is a possibility of the "boat bottom phenomenon," where a shift occurs at the tip of the product. (I plan to cover the "boat bottom phenomenon" and "shift" in a future column!) Products suitable for progressive molds are those that require mass production or complex processing. In the next column, I will explain the "transfer mold"!

Press Mold Special Edition: Mold Maker Column - What is the Hull Bottom Phenomenon?

In the mold shop column, we will be sharing various topics about molds from time to time! (We also publish the mold shop column on our Instagram.)

In this column, I will introduce the "boat bottom phenomenon"! When you want to punch out terminal shapes like those in the icon, processing each pitch as shown in Figure A results in a smaller area being held down during the punching process. This can lead to the stripper plate being unable to hold the product securely in the narrower areas, causing it to tilt due to the force of the punch coming down. This is known as the boat bottom phenomenon. The product that has tilted ends up resembling a boat bottom, hence the name. To avoid this, while changes in layout are necessary, one possible solution is to use a multiple pitch feed as shown in Figure B. In the case of multiple pitch feeding, a single group is punched out at once (all punches come down simultaneously), leaving no room for the product to tip over, thus preventing such issues. However, on the other hand, this will reduce the spacing between the dies, which raises concerns about the strength of the dies. It is necessary to determine specifications based on strength calculations.

Reducing running costs by considering clearance in press molds.

I have summarized the basic content regarding the impact of clearance discrepancies due to board thickness differences and the reduction of running costs achieved through uniform clearance.

Clearance (CL) refers to the gap between the punch and die of a mold. CL is set at 4-7% of the material thickness. The range of 4-7% is determined by the thickness of the material. In the PDF materials, we introduce: - Examples of clearance settings by material thickness: t=0.1mm / t=0.05mm / t=2.0mm - The impact of uneven clearance based on material thickness - The benefits of achieving uniform clearance Table of contents: - What is clearance? - How to set clearance - Examples of clearance by material thickness - Benefits of achieving uniform clearance

Causes of Burrs in Press Molds and Their Countermeasures

[Kyushu Mechanical Components Technology Exhibition] What causes burrs to occur? We will also introduce measures against burrs!

Burrs that inevitably occur when using press molds. Is there a way to reduce burrs? Why do burrs occur in the first place...? Many people may have such questions about whether it's possible to create a mold that produces no burrs at all. If we can minimize burrs, we can enjoy many benefits, such as reducing the time spent on burr removal and ensuring product accuracy. In this document, we will explain in detail why burrs occur in press molds and what measures can be taken to minimize them. Nagumo Manufacturing will be exhibiting at the Kyushu Machine Element Technology Exhibition in Fukuoka, which will be held from November 29 (Wednesday). We look forward to your visit. *For details about the exhibition, please refer to the basic information!

Business Introduction

We are working to reduce setup time through the unitization of high-performance equipment and molds.

Based on over 40 years of diligent effort and relentless technological innovation, we excel in managing not only mass production using general-purpose molds but also small lot production, which has been considered disadvantageous in precision casting with molds due to the adoption of a unit system. [Presenting a Collection of Case Studies on Mold Repair] What is a mold?

To create many identical shapes, a base "mold" is necessary! Here is a brief explanation about molds.

Many of the things around us are made of plastic. One reason for this is that plastic is an inexpensive material that is easy to mold and comes in various types with different properties. Industrial products are also aimed at mass production, so when it comes to how to make many identical items cheaply, efficiently, and with precision, molds have become an indispensable presence. On our website, we provide a simple explanation of what a "mold" is. Please take a look at the related links below. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Types of Mold Manufacturing

We manufacture molds tailored to customer needs, including wooden molds and machining center machines.

At the Light Work Institute, we manufacture aluminum castings using wooden patterns and produce molds using machining center machines. The production of aluminum castings with wooden patterns involves melting aluminum and pouring it into molds created from sand and other materials, then cooling and solidifying it. In the production using machining center machines, we create drawings with 3D software and use the three-dimensional data to cut aluminum alloy plates to create molds. In this document, you can view each manufacturing process. 【Features】 ■ Production of aluminum castings with wooden patterns - Used to create a space in the mold that is the same shape as the finished product, where molten metal is poured in at high temperatures. - Allows for the creation of complex shapes and patterns by melting and pouring. ■ Production using machining center machines - Capable of performing several types of cutting processes in the same location. - Available in vertical, horizontal, and 5-axis control types, used according to specific needs. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
