We present a processing example of a non-spherical mirror mold for HUD with electroless Ni-P plating and a surface roughness of Ra 0.003μm.

[Precision Mold Design and Parts Processing Case Study] Improvement of Tungsten Carbide Punch Lifespan

The lifespan of punches has tripled thanks to milling processing technology for superhard materials! Here, we introduce a case study for a precision electronic components manufacturer.

When processing superhard materials with electrical discharge machining, microcracks due to thermal effects occur during the machining process. These cracks penetrate to a depth of about 20μm, so no matter how much you polish to create a smooth surface, they remain. These cracks can cause wear in punches that are subjected to strong loads. In contrast, milling does not produce any microcracks at all. This column is about press molds! There are several types of "press molds." - Single-stroke molds - Progressive molds - Transfer molds The main three types are listed above. This time, I will introduce the "single-stroke mold"! A single-stroke mold is a type of mold that can perform processes such as cutting, bending, and drawing only once with a single mold. The advantages include lower costs compared to other types of molds because there is only one process and the mold structure is not complex, and, for the same reason, it allows for shorter delivery times. In terms of quality benefits, it helps prevent the "hull bottom phenomenon" and the shifting of the product's tip. (I plan to publish a detailed column about the "hull bottom phenomenon" at a later date!) On the other hand, the disadvantages include the tendency for single-stroke molds to have lower productivity compared to other press molds because they are often operated manually, and the limitation of not being able to perform complex processes due to having only one operation. Single-stroke molds are suitable for products with small lot sizes or large sizes. In this first column, I introduced the "single-stroke mold." In the next column, I will explain the "progressive mold"!

In the previous columns, we introduced single-station and progressive dies. This time, we will introduce the third type, transfer dies! Transfer dies are molds where multiple single-station dies are arranged in a row. Like progressive dies, they use coil materials (refer to Column 2 for more on coil materials). The movement between single-station dies is facilitated by a fixture called a finger, allowing the process to advance to the next stage. This processing method is automated, making it suitable for mass production. The advantages include the ability to mass-produce due to automation and stable quality. Additionally, it allows for an increased number of processes compared to progressive dies, enabling more complex machining. The disadvantages include the difficulty in designing the transport mechanism to move between single-station dies and the fact that having multiple single-station dies lined up results in a relatively higher cost. Transfer dies are suitable for complex products that require processes such as deep drawing. In the next column, we will introduce the "hull phenomenon"!

In response to the voices of our customers that we often hear during our sales activities, Nagumo Manufacturing proposes a processing method that differs from conventional electrical discharge machining. It is common to use carbide and hardened materials for punches and dies, and electrical discharge machining and grinding are the main methods for processing these hard materials.
