Site Investigation | Overcoming Strict Delivery Restrictions Instantly: Self-Propelled Automatic Ram Sounding Test Catalog for Steel Frame Buildings on Narrow Sites | Geotech
In the construction of steel frame buildings in environments where access roads to densely populated urban sites are extremely narrow, the limitations on the transportation of geological survey equipment become a significant bottleneck. This survey solution employs a compact crawler-type automatic ram-sounding machine with a total width of only 830 to 1000 mm, allowing smooth surveys even in tight spaces where heavy machinery cannot enter. Equipped with an automatic impact penetration device using a 63.5 kg hammer, it continuously measures the Nd value every 200 mm, obtaining high-precision data that can be directly compared to the N value from standard penetration tests, up to a maximum depth of 30 m. It quickly identifies hindrances such as debris hidden underground and uneven sloping strata, preventing troubles with neighbors through thorough pre-site inspections and safety management. By balancing rapid survey setup and data accumulation under harsh site conditions, we strongly support the smooth execution of on-site construction plans and reliable pile foundation selection, providing secure and solid ground consulting without delays in construction schedules.

basic information
This survey uses a self-propelled crawler-type drilling machine (YBM model CRS12, etc.). The device has a full width of 1000 mm in normal mode and 830 mm in reduced mode, a total height of 2350 to 2570 mm, and a length of approximately 2350 mm, making it a super compact model. The testing mechanism consists of a falling hammer with a mass of 63.5 kg, an automatic free-fall device with a height of 500 mm, and a penetration cone with a tip angle of 90 degrees and an outer diameter of 45 mm. The number of impacts is measured for every 200 mm of penetration, and the torque measurement values are automatically corrected by the built-in microcontroller to calculate the Nd value. Data recording is automatically saved to a compact flash card, allowing for immediate viewing on-site.

Applications/Examples of results
It will be used in the construction plan for steel frame buildings in densely populated urban areas where large trucks and heavy machinery cannot enter, in flagpole-shaped lots with restricted frontages, and in narrow lots with height differences and existing retaining walls. It is mainly utilized for confirming deep support layers associated with pile length determination using methods such as small-diameter steel pipe pile method, Σ-i method, and tiger pile method. Additionally, it is widely implemented in practical applications such as confirming the presence of underground debris layers at demolition sites, conducting ground surveys with consideration for noise and vibration mitigation in sites adjacent to existing buildings, and performing rapid preliminary ground diagnostics aimed at reducing temporary and demolition costs.
