Cushion Starter The Hitachi Cushion Starter is a semiconductor application product that connects a thyristor in reverse parallel to one phase of the three-phase AC power supply of a motor, allowing for shockless starting of the motor. For floor-operated cranes, the cushion starter is used, while a primary resistor is convenient for controller operation. Primary Resistor Connected to the power side of a squirrel-cage motor, it reduces the applied voltage during acceleration, suppressing the starting torque of the motor to prevent load sway. After acceleration, the resistor is short-circuited to enter constant speed operation, functioning as a reduced voltage starter. It is equipped with tap switches for 30%, 40%, and 50% to ideally select the acceleration state according to the crane.
