The water quality contamination caused by PFAS, which has been gaining attention in recent years, cannot be overlooked as it may be detected in well water and other sources in disaster-stricken areas. In 2024, the Ministry of the Environment announced that values significantly exceeding standards have been found in groundwater and rivers in major metropolitan areas such as Kanto and Kansai. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has tightened regulations on PFAS, specifically PFOS and PFOA, to 4 nanograms/L each starting in April 2024. In Japan, a provisional target value of 50 nanograms/L for the combined total of PFOS and PFOA was set in 2020. From April 2026, local governments will be required to conduct water quality testing. Using reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, over 90% of PFAS, as well as heavy metals and chemicals, can be removed.
