"High Modulus Asphalt" is a type of asphalt specifically designed for high-elasticity upper roadbeds (HiMA: High Modulus Asphalt). It enables the reduction of burdens on lower roadbeds and lowers lifecycle costs, contributing to the longevity of pavement structures. In recent years, there has been an increase in roads, including highways, that have been in service for over 30 years. Particularly in Japan, the aging of infrastructure has become a significant issue, leading to a time when large-scale maintenance and repair works, including for the main structures, are frequently commissioned. It has become clear that the upper and lower roadbeds of long-serving pavement structures are becoming weakened due to gravelization from rainwater infiltration and fatigue cracking that progresses from the lower to the upper layers of the pavement. In response to these issues, the newly developed "high-elasticity upper roadbed mixture" is a mixture that improves fatigue resistance and water resistance compared to asphalt stabilization treatment. By using high modulus asphalt instead of straight asphalt as the binder, this mixture exhibits these enhanced performance characteristics.
