In recent years, there has been an increase in roads, including highways, that have been in service for over 30 years. Particularly in Japan, the aging of infrastructure has become a significant issue, leading to a time when large-scale maintenance and repair works, including for the main structures, are frequently commissioned. It has become clear that the upper and lower roadbeds of long-serving pavement structures are becoming weakened due to gravelization from rainwater infiltration and fatigue cracking that progresses from the lower to the upper layers of the pavement.
