【Lecture Overview】 Railways have continued to evolve in various aspects such as safety, comfort, speed, and environmental performance. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen has maintained absolute safety with zero train accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities for passengers, while also achieving high environmental performance by improving speed and reducing power consumption. In this lecture, we will introduce these features of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and discuss the challenges that the technical team has overcome during the evolution process, incorporating anecdotes from the time of its opening.
