Development of visible light responsive titanium stars! Introducing examples of initiatives in space development.
The photocatalytic material "Titanistar(R)" has been adopted by the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) and the reorganized Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and we would like to introduce our initiatives. ■Initiatives with NASDA We received adoption in the second space development venture and high-tech system project, where we conducted suitability tests on the decomposition of ethanol gas, which is classified as a harmful gas within the International Space Station. We demonstrated the ability to decompose and neutralize this gas, and received an excellence award for being evaluated as outstanding among the research and development results of the project. ■Initiatives with JAXA We received project adoption at the JAXA Open Lab. Our company, Osaka Prefecture University’s Masakazu Anbo Laboratory, and JAXA formed a research unit to start a project focused on air purification technology intended for use in outer space. First, we developed a visible light-responsive Titanistar with the Anbo Laboratory at Osaka Prefecture University. What is the photocatalyst "Titanistar"? It is not a coating-type photocatalyst, nor does it use any of the raw materials employed in those types. By simply performing surface oxidation treatment on titanium within pure titanium metal, it generates a titanium dioxide photocatalytic film on the surface of pure titanium. This film contains no impurities and is generated without any interface with pure titanium. It is characterized by high photocatalytic capability and a highly durable film.
