IO-Link is a communication technology that connects sensors and actuators to a networked industrial environment. Similar to 4-20 mA output, it operates as a point-to-point connection. IO-Link is not only used for transmitting measurement values but can also acquire and transfer additional sensor data. To ensure compatibility, all IO-Link products use the same connection and standardized communication protocol. It is also possible to connect simple binary switching devices. Connection to the controller is made via an IO-Link master. Each device can be easily identified by a unique description file called an IODD. This description file contains details about the device and its functions. Reading and modifying these details can be done through the measuring instrument via the IO-Link master. IO-Link devices can operate in both traditional switch mode and IO-Link mode.
