What are the obligations for disaster preparedness stockpiling as a company? Is safety being adequately considered?
Disaster preparedness supplies should be stocked for at least three days per employee. Stocking disaster supplies is essential for companies.
Currently, disaster preparedness stockpiling by companies is a matter of effort rather than obligation. Japan, being an island nation, faces significant risks of major disasters, including earthquakes, as seen in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and the Osaka earthquake in 2018. The Labor Contract Law does not impose a "duty to stockpile disaster supplies" on companies. That said, companies are obligated to ensure safety. By maintaining disaster preparedness supplies within the company, they can protect the safety of employees from various disasters such as earthquakes and floods. Today, stockpiling disaster supplies is essential for companies. Moreover, it is said that disaster preparedness stockpiling should provide at least three days' worth of supplies per employee. From the perspective of ensuring employee safety and consideration for their well-being in case of emergencies, it is important to have a sufficient quantity of disaster supplies so that all employees can manage at least a few days of basic evacuation life during a disaster. [Disaster Preparedness Stockpiling Guidelines] ■ Drinking water: 3L per day × 3 days = 9L × number of employees ■ Food: 3 meals per day × 3 days = 9 meals × number of employees *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
